I remember...The original 6 "Funny Face" characters: Goofy Grape, Injun Orange*, Freckle-Face Strawberry, Chinese Cherry*, Loud-Mouth Lime & Rootin' Tootin' Raspberry. (* - These flavors were replaced by the more P.C. "Jolly Ollie Orange" and "Choo-Choo Cherry"). I still remember the TV jingle. Quisp & Quake. Giant Ouija Boards; they had to have been at least 30 inches long! The heart was still the same size, though. The Original Schraper Cootie Game. When the lead pipe in the CLUE game was actually made out of lead. The SOMA Cube. Saccrine. When cartoons were aired during prime-time. Leonard Nemoy singing "Billfold" (and making a total --- out of himself) on a TV show called "Where the Action Is", which was sort of like "American Bandstand", but on the beach. Moola Coola ("The softdrink that comes from cows"). Rock'em Sock'em Robots ("You knocked my block off!"). Who's the Funny Man? ("Which - one - will - it - be?"). I hated that show. Cool McCool. Army men. When we were kids, we didn't have much toys so we played with DIRT, or DIRT accessories like Army men. Creepy Crawlers and the psuedo-food-like Incredible Edibles. Wishniks. Nifty Notebooks. Slide Rules. I still have a few of them. Barrel of Monkeys - the giant version, with 6-inch monkeys in a huge canister. Charles' Chips (and Charles' Pretzels).B&W TV sets with no UHF knob. When AM Radio was "cool".Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass (The Lonely Bull, Volume Two, South of the Border, Whipped Cream and Other Delights, Going Places...). This may sound crazy, but I remember my parents having one of these albums in tape format; not a cassette, not an 8-track, but something that looked liked a very thick floppy disk! Does anyone else remember this, or do I just have a short circuit? Keds tennis shoes. A 'Flesh' Crayola Crayon. Reiter & Hart milk (which is now just plain Reiter). Mumbley Peg and Jacks. "This is a test. This is only a test." Record players... MONO record players with the "16" and "78" speeds. 45-RPM adapters. Why they called it a phone "dial". When 'Courtney' was a guy's name. For some reason, I do not remember the assination of JFK. Of course, I was only 6 at the time and didn't care too much about it. Then again, I'm 42 and still don't care about it.-CMcF

Andi comments: I remember the first time I watched Dick Van Dyke trip over the ottoman. Wonderama on Sunday mornings. Our favorite meal was Howard Johnson's frozen chicken croquettes from a box. The McDonald's opened the golden arches went around through the roof on each side. You couldn't eat inside, you got your food and ate in the car. Also Gino's had special deals on Wednesday's I think it was $.10 hamburgers and $.15 cheeseburgers. This was the only night of the week we could eat out. Also remember Big Buddy bubble gum and getting a Lilt at Easter time. Crazy times. Wish they were back. Your site is really cool. I love the 60's, and I used to havea site like this! It was really cool reading this, and I was totally into it! Keep up the good work!

Marvelous site! I totally agree that Mark Lester was to die for, and he still is! (I'm 38 and I'm STILL in love with him1) I remember all the things you mentioned, and don't forget the Monkees on Saturday morning, or doughnut-shaped Panasonic radios (I still have mine, in blue), slinkys and "Hip" gum, the round psychedelic-colored gum. Again, charming site. Regards, Jan

I found your web site and am wondering something. You know how sometimes you will just wonder what ever happened to people, a show, etc.....? I used to watch a tv show everday after school - probably early 60's - with Sam Riddle a Calif. disc jockey - and he had a really cute blonde girl with him named Cam. I think it was called the "Sam and Cam " show. I have been going through some old things and would love to know what happened to them. I think people danced on it, etc. I thought my life was over if I ever had to miss it! I am 43 now.  Any info on this? Please write back. I also have over 200 45 records. Would love to talk to people who loved the 60's like I did......

Hi Robin, and Greetings from a former 60's Hippy! Nice page you put together. There is so much here I had forgotten about over the years and it's been nice browsing through it. I could spend hours looking through all your stuff and I probably will. Thanks for the Memories!

I wonder if anyone remembers a plastic ball that came apart in the center, and had spouts on each end. You opened it up, put a scoop of icecream inside, snapped it shut, and put one end into a bottle of "pop", making an icecream float. Mine was red and white, but I don't remember what they were called, and nobody I talk to even remembers them! I imagine these were in the early 1960's. Also, wasn't there a drink called "King Stir". There was a tablet on the end of a plastic stirring stick, and you stirred it into a glass of water to make a kool-aid type drink. Oh - and while I'm at it, I sure miss Pizza Spins! YUM!!
Jayne

GREAT site - what a wonderful trip down memory lane. My favorite thing was those big balls filled with air with a loop at the top to hold on and you bounced all over - HOPPITY HOP it was called. I was devestated when my little brother put a pencil through it. I still love to drink TaB diet soda. Remember "zots" candy that fizzed in the middle?
Brenda

I am a teacher and was looking for some memories from the 60's for a parent/child project. Your website was the best thing I could have found. I enjoyed reminiscing and called my husband in for him to share. I knew you had to be from MD when you mentioned Gino's. Do you remember Amechi's or The Hot Shop? Thanks it was fun!
Donna

Excellent! I'm 42 years old and reading the stuff on your web site...the toys...Pixie Stiks, wax lips...the music...just great. And when I saw your picture in the Nehru jacket and Twiggy hairdo I had this big stupid grin on my face. You've put together something here that is more than just a collection of 60's stuff. There's a synergy here. I saw your picture and it's almost like I remember sitting next to you in school. I'll be back often. Next best thing to a time machine. You can't go home again, but you can thumb through the photo album...and your site is so much more than that. I appreciate all the work you've done here. I might even go out and buy Barry Williams "Johnny Bravo" album. (Whoa! Let's not get carried away here.) Thanks again...

I found this site looking for info on how to play chinese jump rope. I gave one to a friend's 10 year old daughter who had never seen one. Her mother and I remember the first few jumps. Does anyone remember how to play this? I've also noticed some of our favorite candies making a comeback. Remember Razzles - first they're a candy, then they're a gum! I've been able to find them along with wax lips, fizzies, pop rocks, flying saucers, nickel nips(those little wax bottles filled with colored sugar syrup) and have started introducing my nephews to these favorites from my childhood.
Lynda Pagliarulo

Great Page! It brings a smile to my face and an occasional tear to the eye! Great memories!
Karen

I remember Fuzzy Wuzzy soap, Fizzies, making a "sit upon" in Brownies, Kiddles, giant Sweet Tarts, the big fuzzy slippers my sister's used to wear, thinking bell bottoms were so cool and now they are back in style! The smell of paper grocery bags with bread in them. I wish some of these products were made again. My kids can't believe soap can grow fuzz, how did they do that anyway?
Kathy

I REMEMBER THE BERTHA BUTT BOOOOOOOOOGIEEEE!!!!!!!!!!! I neeeeeeeeeeeed to find that song! Do you know of a place on the internet where I can listen to it or download it? I live in Holland (originally from DC) and I'm looking for that song. Do you have it? BTW, love your Cadillac. Back in the 70's, the cute "hippie" chick on our block used to drive me to swimming lessons in a 69 convertible PINK Cadillac.
Richard Seabra

This page brought back lots of memories. It only cost 3 cents to mail a letter; I remember when gas was 29.9 cents a gallon and I thought that was expensive. As far as junk food is concerned, M&M's Fruit Chewies and M&Ms chocolate wafer bars (now Starburst and Kit Kat). Twinkies and chocolate cupcakes were a dime a pack, as were potato chips. Remember those little packs of charcoal (??) in every bag of chips to keep them fresh? Who can ever forget the nickel coca cola??? (Now I'm getting hungry !!) Thanks again for your website! It's been fun!!
Tom

I live in Ventura, CA and the last existing Drive-In Movie Theater in Ventura County is just down the street from me. They've just stopped playing movies there and are now about to close it. Remember getting your pajamas on before getting in the car to go to the movie. Remember getting out of the car in the cold night air to go to the snack bar to get a BUNCH of JUNK to eat. Remember the sound of those car speakers. Remember all the car lights and the sound of all the cars pulling out of the gravel parking lot when the movie ended. Then of course when we got older we discovered other ways of having fun in our cars at the movies!! I just have to say too, that for me the best thing of all about growing up back then was that there seemed to be a kid in just about every house on every block I lived on (my father was transfered with his job several times, like many fathers back then were) within 1 or 2 years of my age.
Debbie Haagenson

I like it. I was there. Sleeping under bridges and riding my thumb for 3.5 years across US, Canada, and Europe. Now I teach engineering and usually have to act like I've never been there. But sometimes ...
Lynn Jarrett

Oh wow....I remember the smell of incense, in rooms with black lights...lava lamps...granny dresses...bells...the Cafe Wha?...And as I sit here with my incense burning, I'm transported...and still very young...forever.
Marlene

"What a wonderful spot. I was looking for some links for my column, and you brough back some wonderful memories for me."
Sheila

Does anyone remember the game Feely Meely? With the holes in the sides of the box so you could feel what was inside? You drew cards to tell you what you had to find! Or do you remember Tricky Tommy Turtle? All you had to do is blow the magic whistle to make him go. He worked 40% of the time. How about Velvet and Chrissy dolls with the growing hair? Did you ever cut yours? Heh heh....
Karen

Love your page, but just want to comment on the "arm pit farts". LOL!! I made the best arm pit and hand farts in my neighborhood and what a feat that was being a girl, LOL
Marie

I think you and the others just about covered it all. Soc hops? Ironing hair? Most of us "went steady" by the time we were 12, dating started early in those days, parents pushed us into the adult world and then wondered why we were such "rebels".
Dots

Even though i'm not from the 60's, I just remember playing all those games and the music from that era. there are some days that i wished i was able to be in 60's just to see how it was my mom tells me about all the time. thanks keep up the great work. Crystal =-)

Very cool site.. I am adding a link to my 60s toy site. http://www.timewarptoys.com

Hey man, I was just diggin' your site... If you're ever in the neighborhood of Picton, Ontario between May and October (on any Sat or Sun), stop in and say high at Mustang SUMMER OF LOVE Art & Farm Fair. It's a groovy time and I think you would dig it. It's held at the Mustang Drive-In on county road 1 (Schoharie road) in Prince Edward County. Please help spread the word. EVERYONE is welcome. Vendors welcomed, too... Peace~pass it on~

Great Site! I came upon your site doing a search for "fuzzy wuzzy soap". No one seems to remember it. Things were so simple back then. I remember going on vacations and being able to stand on the seat next to my parents. I think my first encounter with a seat belt was when I dropped some M&M's between the seats!
Tammy King

I come to your site for inspiration and to assist me in remembering the past. What fond dreams I have of days gone by! I was born in 1963, and when I was 5, I had a toy fire engine that you peddled. Remember when all the toys were made of either wood or "steel" and lasted forever? I am now a single parent and a professional computer programmer. A single parent and father was not even thinkable then! I want so despirately for my children to do some of the things that I did when I was a kid. With the assistance of your web site, there will be things that my children will experience from "our" generation. Things were so simple then. Do you remember The Art Linkletter Show? I think that was the way his last name was spelled. Or Red Buttons? The comedian. Or Phyllis Diller. Again, I can remember the person clearly, but the spelling is shaky. I can remember "Dark Shadows" on TV, and crueling behide my mom, because I thought it was "too scary". I love this site, and have added it to my favorites list. It is great!
Anthony Matz

I was there, but on the cusp (1945) of the baby boomers. It was fun taking your trip (remember those?). Going w/ your parents when they visited their friends, going out to the car to go home, falling asleep and waking just as your dad was carrying you in the door at home. Hot pants, movies on Sat for 20 cents, everyone doing Tarzan yells as they came out of the show, Sputnik, JFK in Dallas, "Goodness, gracious, great balls of fire!"
Dennis Babson

I remember also a drink called Fizzies. The little fruit flavored tablets you dropped in water.
Marilyn

Robin, Great website! Although I was born in '67, I could identify with most of the things you list. I'm now showing my 1.5 year old daughter how to properly roll white bread into a ball and eat it, giving her bites of my banana sandwiches (except I use butter, not mayo), armpit farts, reversed eyelids, yo-yo tricks, etc... I landed on your site while searching for "hoppity hop/horse" because everyone I talk to says it's "HIPpity hop," but I swear that it's "Hoppity." This is a minor dispute between my wife and I that I feel needs to be resolved. If you know of any websites where I can obtain some documented proof, please tell me...PEACE!
Steve
(p.s. I do have photos of me giving the peace sign when I was little, so I'm not one of the modern day 60's wanna-be's)

YOU GO STEVE!!! Here is your official notice: We can all rest easy now that Steve can prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that the item in question is indeed called a "Hoppity Hop"! Steve --you were RIGHT! Congratulations!!! :)

Subject: HOPPITY HOP! Right on! Date: Mon, 27 Sep 1999 10:09:51 -0700 From: Steven
Robin, It must have been over a year since you posted my HOPPITY vs. HIPPITY question on your website. I am back to prove WRONG all those who told me it was HIPPITY HOP, and I have undeniable proof! Thanks to your website, another concerned individual directed me to this Hoppity Hop which was auctioned on e-bay. If you get a chance, please put this picture up for the world to see. Thanks!

Excellent...who ever remembered HRPuffinstuff...I did....with Jack Wild....also Mark Lester who played in Oliver Twist....to die for....Posters on the wall of both... How about Hide 'n Seek also known as Kick the Can. Mom telling us to get our bathing suits on when it was raining outside and go and play...never today...I have the pic to prove it. Metal rollerblades with a key..Melanie.."I got a brand new pair of roller skates, you got a brand new key" Horned rimmed glasses...ugh..I was too young but my sister, not to die for...Bonanza....Gilligan's Island...(my son looks just like him and even has a hat like his) 45's were a nickle...to my kids they are like 78's were to me. I love your page and it makes my heart sick only because those were secure days when life was absolutely wonderful. I always sat on my dad's lap and he gave me bear hugs...right up until I was 34. His lap is no longer around and either are these wonderful times...but the memories are still there with the same smell and enveloping warmth. Thank-you for such a deep idea. ...The Ghost and Mrs. Muir....I can still remember sitting downstairs watching that all alone....loved it, cause mom was just upstairs, baking.. Do our children have these memories...I hope so and I am trying to make them.
Linda Weagle

Pop-Rocks, Sea Monkeys, Rock 'em, Sock 'em Robots, Ant Farms, Lite-Bright, those ball shaped radios that looked like a smiley face, skatemania, Tab cola, ruffled shirts and big bow-ties at the prom.
Richard

Flavored straws for your milk, lik-m-aid straws, wax lips (and some kind of colored sugar drink in little wax bottles), Dr. Kildare shirts, slinky, PENNY CANDY,and the list goes on! Great site, Robin.
Jill

I remember that we never locked our doors, except when we left town for vacation. All we had was 3 channels on TV, and the radio was only AM. Playing marbles (Cat eyes and steely's). I love your website. It really brough tears to my eyes, since I have forgotten almost all of the stuff that I read here. Thank you.

Tony in a basket

October 1971 -Tony in a basket.

Robin Remembers: I loved my "wheels". I had a Sting Ray bicycle with a banana seat, a girl sized sissy bar, cards attached to the spokes, a front basket, and tassels hanging from the handle bars. "Pop a Wheelie"!! It was a 3 speed, in light metallic green. My banana seat had bright flower power stickers. My dad got me a rear view mirror, a horn and battery operated turn signals, that had that clicky click sound. I thought I was hot! This is the ONLY picture I have of that bike.. :(

Archie Comics were my favorite reading material for many years as a child. I had a 3 foot high stack that my mom threw away in 1973. :( I remember having a total fit when I came home from school and saw that they were gone. I remember the prices as being: 5 cents, then 7, then 10, 12 and finally 15, before I stopped collecting them. The jumbo issues were a quarter. I must have been in the Archie Club as some issues were mailed to me.

Jumping out of my friend's tree house with an umbrella, pretending I was Mary Poppins and that I could fly. I still have the scar on my thigh to prove it!

I remember being around five, and sneaking the brand new box of Lucky Charms my mom just bought, out of the kichen. I went outside to the back patio and dumped them out on the cement. I then proceeded to pick out all the colored marshmallows into a pile and then I ate them all at one, sheer bliss!  I carefully scooped the boring cereal back into the box and put it back inside the cabinet. Who was I fooling? She bought them for me! Did she or Dad eat Lucky Charms? I don't think so!
