2 CONT Dora's siblings were Albert and Bernard Katz and Ida Katz Weissman who 
2 CONC died in Wash DC in 1983.
2 CONT Avrum and Glicka and family arrived in US between 1922-24.

2 CONT Dora was widowed in 1955 and later married Jack Fleischman in the mid 
2 CONC 60's. Both Dora and Jack died in 1985.

1 NOTE Sam Bronstien (or Braunstein) was born in Odessa, Russia.

2 CONT He came to St Louis, MO when he was 7, he had an uncle named LOUIS 
2 CONC CHERRY.
2 CONT Sam then went back to Russia, but came back to the US when he was 17 
2 CONC years old.
2 CONT He came back by 'underground', it took him 3 years to get back to the US.
2 CONT 
2 CONT The 1930 Census states that Sam came to the US in 1915 when he was 20 
2 CONC years old. He was 27 when he and Grandma married. Sam lists his job in 
2 CONC 1930 as a 'paper hanger'. Their address was 5030 7th Place, Washington, 
2 CONC DC. For the 1930 Census the spelling listed is for "Bronstein".

2 CONT Sam changed the spelling to the more Americanized 'Brownstein' from 
2 CONC Bronstein by the time Esther, his only child was born in 1937.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Esther say that her father never spoke about his earlier life. The only 
2 CONC time she can recall any stories was at the "Cousins Club" in the 1940's. 
2 CONC When new immigrants finally made it to the US, they would have big get 
2 CONC togthers called the "Cousins Club" and the new arrival would share their 
2 CONC stories of hardship of how they arrived to the US. There were always many 
2 CONC children there sitting on the floor.
2 CONT 
2 CONT During one of those gatherings, Esther recalled hearing her Dad tell this 
2 CONC story:
2 CONT (Odessa, Russia) If you were a Jew you'd be killed and they had to 
2 CONC escape. Sam was being "smuggled" by hay wagon to get out of town. He 
2 CONC could hear the soldiers getting near, then they started stabbing the hay 
2 CONC with pitch forks, while he was buried in there. 
2 CONT 
2 CONT Another short memory:
2 CONT Life in Odessa --as a kid Sam would hang around the docks. He said he 
2 CONC used to steal and eat the grapes from the docks. He had a lifelong 
2 CONC passion for grapes.
2 CONT 
2 CONT On Sam's 1954 naturalization papers it lists his hair color as black, 
2 CONC complexion as olive, eye color as brown, height as 5'6. His weight was 
2 CONC 153 and he had a tattoo on his right hand.
2 CONT He was 59 years old in 1954.

2 CONT **The Zabrek home was valued at $20,000.00.
2 CONT **Under education, he says "No", however he can both read and write.
2 CONT **He lists his birth place as "Russia", however we believe he was born 
2 CONC specifically in Poland.
2 CONT **Louis lists he immigrated in 1909, that would make him 13-14 at that 
2 CONC time.
2 CONT **Dora lists 1914, however her Ellis Island passenger records indicated 
2 CONC her date of arrival as Nov. 11, 1912.
2 CONT ** The Census states that Herman was born in Russia about 1917. They must 
2 CONC have been visiting as they were married in Washington DC March 1916.
2 CONT Louis' occupation is listed as a "Grocer".
2 CONT Abraham Katz listed as "Father-in-law" lived with the Zabreks in 1930.
