Nicknames: Most of us recognize Bill as a nickname for William, and we may know that Peggy can be a nickname for Margaret. (We just don't know why.) But how many modern people recognize Polly as a nickname for Mary, or Patsy as a nickname for Martha? When we find a source that tells us a man was married to Mary, and another source that tells us he was married to Polly, we may think he had two wives, when in fact "Polly" was just Mary's nickname. This is complicated by the fact that sometimes these names aren't nicknames. Sally might be a nickname for Sarah, but it might just be a girl's given name. And, of course, there are also odd nicknames that were used in a family that are even harder to recognize because they weren't common.

More proof that Pasty is Martha:

George Washington's father died when the future president was young. His mother was a harsh disciplinarian insuring George and his siblings behaved. George seemed to flee her whenever he could get away spending time at his half-brother's Mount Vernon home (yes – that historical home). George's first love is Sally Fairfax and his chosen profession surveyor, but war seemed to be his destiny. First he fought (unsuccessfully) during the French and Indian War and then the American Revolution.

This biography uses Washington's retirement to Mount Vernon with his beloved Patsy (Martha's nickname) as a focal point for looking back over the lives of the first president and his spouse.

102. Henry L. CLANTON [scrapbook] was born 27 Feb 1784 in Sussex County, VA. He died 5 May 1845 in Jasper County, Missouri. Henry married Branchy DILLARD on 2 Jul 1807 in Williamson County, TN. [Parents]

BIOGRAPHY: After the death of his father in 1791, Henry was placed under the guardianship of his grandfather John Meglamre. After his grandfather's death in 1799, Nathaniel Chambliss was appointed his guardian.

BIOGRAPHY: The will of John Clanton stated that his land was to be equally divided between the three brothers, but it appears that in 1805, Drury, with his mother and step father, Edward Whitehorn, had an intention of not turning over the shares to Henry and Robert, now under the Guardianship of Nathaniel Chambliss. On November 7, Chambliss entered into the Sussex County Court on behalf of Henry and Robert to have the court assist them in dividing this tract of land on Racoon Swamp. The court ordered this to be done and Drury and his mother, along with Whitehorn, consented to let it happen.

BIOGRAPHY: The court assigned several people to divide it fairly, thus on February 5, 1806, Henry acquired ninety-seven acres on the north side of Racoon Swamp and 139 acres on the south side of the aforesaid swamp. In 1807, Henry moved to Williamson County, Tennessee. He took part in the War of 1812, and in January 1815 fought at the Battle of New Orleans. From Williamson County, he moved to the neighboring county of Davidson. On August 20, 1817, Henry Clanton of Davidson County sold 140 acres on the waters of Hurricane Creek in Rutherford County, Tennessee, to John Walpole for $500. About 1820, Henry moved to join his older brother, Drury, in Montgomery County, Missouri. After 1840, Henry moved from Montgomery County to Jasper County, Missouri. Henry wrote his will on April 16, 1845, and it was probated in Jasper County in August 1845, he having died on May 5th of that year. His will can be found in the Callaway County Deeds, Vol. 1, PP. 371-73.

BIOGRAPHY: Henry was the Grandfather of Ike and Billy Clanton of the Gunfight at the OK Corral Fame.

Melissa Sallee, granddaughter of Henry L. Clanton is first cousins with the infamous Clanton boys, Ike and Billy Clanton of Tombstone Arizona. My husband was quite upset when I informed him of his genetic link (1st cousins, 4 generations removed) to the Clantons. My husband then professed his life long allegiance to Doc and Wyatt and said "those dirty Clantons got what they deserved!"  (lol)  He also said "Don't tell anyone I am related to the Clantons!"  Double 'LOL', I am amused by the whole thing.

103. Branchy DILLARD was born about 1785 in Halifax, NC, USA. She died before 1816 in Tennesee. [Parents]
