Abel Hare was born in Potsdam, New York in 1857. He was married three times. His first wife Sarah Madden died from complications due to childbirth.

At some point between 1860 and 1880, Abel's family moved from New York to Indiana. Abel and Sarah were neighbors and show up on the same street from the 1880 Indiana Federal Census.

At the time of his death, Abel had a brother named Walter Hare who lived in Ft. Wayne Indiana. Abel was a Methodist.
